“You’re never going to survive”.  Those were the words of encouragement I received at the young age of 20 years old.   I was broke. Like broke, broke. I had just recently left my Dad’s company to strike out on my own.  And things weren’t going well. I was on a job site early in the morning when a colleague of my Dad sidled up beside me.

“Tim,” he said.  “You’re an idiot and you’re never going to survive.”

I’d like to tell you that I told him to shove it but I didn’t.  I went back to my car and burst into tears. But looking back it was a good life lesson.  It’s a dog-eat-dog world out there and you have to be tough to survive.

I’m joined this week by Adam Bartman, co-founder of ReedWater.io.  The company is on the bleeding edge of water management technology.  His products allow plumbers and building managers to be able to quickly identify leaks and other problems and shut them down.  Together we talk about our respective origin stories and how we’ve survived the many hardships of running a business.

I have seen a lot of attempts to bring technology into new buildings.  Some of them make sense, but a whole lot more are just giant money sucks.  That’s not the case with today’s guest.   Adam Bartman is one of the most impressive young entrepreneurs I’ve met in a very long time.  He started working as a plumber with his Dad when he was still a teenager.  Now in his early 30’s Adam is the co-founder of Reed Water.

Reed promises to do something property managers have been dreaming about for decades.  Their technology allows for total control and monitoring of every valve and fixture in your building.  Trying to track down missing water inside older buildings can be a costly nightmare.  Adam explains how the technology works.  And he and Tim debate the merits of incorporating more “smart” technology in new buildings.
